Braiding

Sick of spending forever in the bathroom trying to blow-dry your hair into something that resembles order, only to have one little breeze destroy your hard work? If you want the ultimate in no-fuss hair, then braids might be the answer you’re looking for!

Tailored to each individual’s preference and hair type, Darker Shades of Beauty offers a range of braids including:

Micro Braids

Micro Braids are tiny, delicate braids that are tightly woven into your hair, and generally last for several months. They are a great option, especially if you have long hair. Whilst Micro Braids are commonly seen on African women, they can be done on nearly any hair type.

Unlike Box Braids, which are a little bulkier, Micro Braids are much smaller and easier to style. Micro Braids are thin enough to allow you to create most hairstyles, such as pony tails and buns, whatever you like really!

Box Braids

Box Braids are very similar to Micro Braids but they are created using three strand braiding. The process is very time consuming and can take up to ten hours or more to complete, depending on hair type and length. Hair extensions can also be incorporated to enhance the look of your braids, adding length and thickness to the style.

The great thing about Box Braids is that, like Micro Braids, they are not attached to the scalp like cornrows are, so you have lots of options as to how you choose to style them. Whilst the process may take a long time, the finished product is beautiful and can last for several months.

Twists

Twists are very popular with African women or anyone with thick, unruly hair. The style is achieved by dividing the hair into sections, twisting together two small sections of hair, and then twisting two twisted strands around one another. The result is a polished and glamorous look that can last for a long time if care is taken to maintain them. (e.g. It is recommended that a headscarf or sleeping bonnet is used overnight.)

Cornrows

Cornrows are a traditional African hairstyle, in which the hair is braided very close to the scalp to produce a continuous, raised row. Rows can be done in straight lines or in patterns, depending on your preference. Cornrows are worn by men, women and children, and are a popular option because they are easy to maintain and last up to 6-8 weeks. Many people going away overseas choose to get it done so they have fuss-free hair for their entire holiday!
